The WAGON BOX RANCH š

GENERAL DESCRIPTION š

The Wagon Box Ranch is located southeast of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The ranch spans three counties: Banner, Morrill, and Cheyenne. There are 11,040 deeded acres plus 640 "State of Nebraska School Lease" acres for a total acreage of 11,680 acres. The entire property is in one block. Despite its size, the ranch is very secluded

The elevation on the ranch ranges from 4,200 to 4,400 feet above sea level. The high bluffs and rough country provide livestock protection along the creek and around the headquarters. The range land consists of 16 different varieties of grass including short and long stem blue, black root, and buffalo, just to name a few. These varieties provide grasses for both hot and cool seasons. The range land consists of large valleys, rolling hills, bluffs, and pine covered ridges.

The Wagon Box Ranch, and the surrounding area, is very strong in active agricultural businesses including cattle raising and farming. The ranch itself is operated as a year-round cattle and farming operation.

CATTLE š

At the Wagon Box, we raise both registered and commercial cattle. It is rated at 650 to 800 animal units year round. For information on our registered Angus cattle and our "Free Bull Program" see the CATTLE section of our WEB site.

FARMING and HAY PRODUCTION š

The ranch contains approximately 800 acres of irrigated farm land. Irrigation is by electric sprinklers. There are another 300 acres for dry-land farming.

Hay and crop production naturally varies from year to year depending on rainfall and snow pack. The farm land is all in good condition as is all of the grass land. According to the Soil Conservation Service, the ranch receives 13" to 16" of precipitation annually. However, in 1995, the ranch received 24" and, in 1996, received over 30" of rain. Our top quality clean hay is sold all over the west. See our section on HAY

WATER š

The source of water for crop irrigation is from wells located throughout the valley. The water level varies from 14’ to 20’ with 110’ of water bearing gravel and sand. The wells were tested at 2,000 gallons per minute for 24 hours in 1975. This test only dropped the water level in the well to 32’.

There are a few springs scattered throughout the creek that runs through the ranch. These are used for watering livestock. In addition to the springs, there are nine wells with pumps and seven windmills, plus approximately 7 miles of pipeline. The owner is now installing pipelines and planting 3,800 trees per year for wildlife and fruit.

ACCESS š

The Wagon Box Ranch is just 22 miles off of Interstate 80 in western Nebraska. Take the "Potter, NE" exit, which is 20 miles east of Kimball NE. Go north 14 miles to the end. Turn west for 22 miles then north again for 2 miles on County Road 14.
