TEST SHOT FOR
PHOTO 200: LIGHTING

(There are 5 Images in this series.  Scroll down to view them in sequence from camera original to finished version.)
Lighting Demo: 2/26/08. The subject is a A pair of old harmonicas to demonstrate lighting of highly reflective objects. Backdrop is black velvet.

The shot was taken with a  Canon 5D using an 85mm F1.8 EF lens at F20 with Norman Studio Strobes as the lighting. One softbox through a diffusion light panel was used

1.  This is the original shot as it came from the camera plus minor levels and curves adjustments

2.  For this exposure a scrim made of folded plastic screening was laid on the diffusion panel to create the dark area on the plate of the top harmonica.
3.  As an experiment, the scrim roll was widened and made thinner to cover more of the plate and make the dark area a little lighter.
4.  An orange gel was added to the scrim roll to show the effect of adding color to the shot.
5.  Here is a detail of how the light brings out the engraving on the nickle silver cover plates.

We ran out of time but the next steps would have been to:

a. Add some color to the bottom harmonica, and,
b. Bring in a fill light  from the front to show the mouth pieces of the instruments.
