For this demo a finely facetted small crystal vase was the subject for both black line and white line styles of shooting. Demo was shot with a Canon 1Ds MkII and a Canon 70-200 f4L.

The first shot here to the right is the black-line shot.  The Lighting is incredibly simple.  It consists of a single light aimed at the background wall.behind the vase. The effect is caused by the light coming back through the item.  Where the crystal is thicker the lines are darker.

This type of approach can also be done on a light table with the background light modulated to create various effects.

Here is a detail from the shot above.  You can see the "rainbow" prism colors in some of the facets even after I removed the major red/yellow ones.

There was nothing anywhere near the set that had these colors in it.

This also gives you a sense of the detailed carving on this crystal piece in this rather massive enlargement from the original file (and of the original item as well. I did not measure them but my recollection is that each of the facets on the original vase are approximately 3/8" square at their base.

This second shot is the first white-line version.

Here again the lighting is quite simple:  A single light head aimed up through the glass panel the vase is sitting on.

Because of the brilliant specular highlights on the white line versions of the shot (here and below) were made at a stop less exposure than the blackline version at the top.

The effect is caused by turning the vase into a sort of "fiber optic" where the light from below travels up through the glass and treats the rim and facets like the ends of the fiber bundle.

This last shot is nearly identical to the one above except that a small mirror reflector was employed to provide some light on the facets to make them stand out a little.

The effect is small but it does bring out the depth of the cuts better.
