PHOTO 200: LIGHTING

(There are 3 Images in this series.  Scroll down to view them in sequence from camera original to finished version.)
Lighting Demo: 02/23/09.

The subject is an old finger piano and a tambourine used in a mock-up for a cover shot. To complete the design a  necklace (handcrafted by Prof. Siobhan Ridgeway) has been added to the composition.

The shot was taken with a  Canon 1DS Mk!! using an 180mm macro lens at F11 with Norman Studio Strobes as the lighting.

This First shot is the basic file right out of the camera with no retouching/editing.

The lighting consisted of

1. A beauty dish providing the basic rim lighting.

2. A Softbox Fill and

3. A snoot fabricated from cinefoil to skim across the face of the piano and highlight the front with its incised design.

4. A free standing flat  used as a cutter (large flag) to hold back the light on the backgroud.

The final image has been cropped for magazine cover dimensions, edited in Photoshop, and has type included to simulate the cover layout.

Editing was limited primarily to burning the foreground and darkening the background then using curves to slightly increase the contrast in the carved design on the front of the finger piano.
